I wandered lonely as a cloud……
You will never feel lonely during a trip to The Lake District, as you will always have the amazing countryside to keep you company. The Lakes have, arguably, some of the best landscape that the UK has to offer, inspiring many artists, writer and poets, like William Wordsworth.
Wordsworth first visited Grasmere in 1799 and instantly fell in love with the village. After having travelled all over Europe, he returned to The Lake District, describing Grasmere as ‘ the loveliest spot that man has ever found’. Set in the heart of The Lakes, Grasmere has inspired many poets over the years, due to its stunning beauty and unique tranquility. Wordsworth fans can visit Dove Cottage, where the famous poet lived with his sister, Dorothy, and find out all about his life in the museum next to the cottage. The area is packed full of pretty chocolate box cottages, guesthouses and camping spots, for those visiting on varying budgets. The Daffodil Hotel is a luxury 78 room building, complete with a lake view restaurant, spa and thermal pool. After a long day of walking, this hotel is the perfect way to unwind and treat yourself.
Nearby Ullswater is the place that Inspired Wordsworth’s most famous poem, Daffodils. Wordsworth and his sister often walked for days, moving on from one village to another and taking in the glorious scenery. The daffodils that the pair spotted by one of the lakes, captured their hearts and minds and the rest, as they say, is history. You can visit Glencoyne Park, the site where the siblings spotted the daffodils, and enjoy time at this National Trust site. Another way to view the daffodils is to take one of the Ullswater Steamers cruises across the lake. Ullswater is the second largest of the lakes, in the The Lake District, and is packed full of activities for all of the family. Walking and cycling tours can be arranged, or you can simply wander at your own pace and perhaps be inspired to write a poem yourself.
If you need to unwind after a harsh week at work, The Lake District is the ultimate place to kick off your shoes and relax.
For oft, when on the couch, I lie
In Vacant or in pensive mood,
they flash upon the inward eye
which is the bliss of solitude:
and then my heart with pleasure fills,
and dances with the daffodils.
